Salmon River, NY: 4 Season Steelhead Fishery

Back in October, I experienced the circus of the chinook and coho run on the Salmon River, NY. I’ve been up there a half dozen times, and why I return is a mystery. It’s time to change tactics, and fish for steelhead in the winter and spring. Fly Fisherman magazine ran a nice article in its recent edition on the 4 season steelhead fishery in upstate NY.

Mosquito Lagoon Redfish

I’m preparing for a big redfish trip, to commence on 25 Feb 2011, right after HIMSS.  I’ll be fly fishing, but a few of my colleagues will likely use traditional spin casting gear.

I’m counting on my Jim Teeny specialized saltwater site fishing line and Mini-Tip line to do the trick, along with the expert guide-manship of Captain Scott Macalla.

Here is what you can expect, courtesy of another guide’s post on You Tube:

MacBaren Golden Ambrosia Review Written in Granada, Spain

Here is “Tantric’s” excellent review of MacBaren Golden Ambrosia, which I lifted off of  TobaccoReviews.com. I liked the review as the author stumbled across a small shop in the old Arab quarters of Granada, one of my favorite places in the world.  I have visited Granada many times, and it truly is the land of “sol y nieve.”  I’ve skied in the morning and hit the beaches nearby in the afternoon.  Maybe its time to return to visit, this Spring.

Anyway, back to the review:

Tantric 03/20/2005 Medium Mild Mild to Medium Pleasant

“In a visit to the Albayzin, the old Arab quarters in the magical Spanish city of Granada, I suddenly found this most picturesque ?estanco?, lost in the middle of one of those narrow, cobbled-stone streets, that offered some pipes and pipe tobacco. Why not? I had left mine at the hotel, so in I went and I bought a very interesting straight billiard, part of the bowl and the shank covered in leather. But when I looked for something to put inside, I only saw Borkum Riff, Amphora red and a couple of Mac Barens’. I though this tobacconist may have some French Caporal hidden somewhere, or a Spanish version of the old Napoleonic troops’ pipe tobacco, but nothing doing.  As I was not planning to go back to the hotel anytime soon, I decided to try the Mac Baren tobaccos, and bought some Mixture Aromatic and Golden Ambrosia. One must hand it to them: as far as merchandising and distribution go, Borkum Riff and Mac Baren can be really found ANYWHERE (if only Dunhill or Rattray had the same market oriented strategy!).  I then found a small café, with a magnificent view to the Alhambra on the hills in front and, down below, to the rest of the city. Lamenting my lack of prevision (what an excellent time this would have been to smoke an Oriental mixture! I thought to myself), I asked for a ?cortado?, took a seat and proceeded to fill in and light up, as I took in the wonderful views that so inspired Washington Irving and Lord Byron.  Mid morning, balmy weather, blue skies above, almost no other tourists in sight, I sipped my coffee and then lit up the pipe. I had chosen Golden Ambrosia. In the pouch it had a fruity aroma, but nothing to really put me off. It was more of a topping than a casing. Not at all moist, the tobacco was supple enough to be rubbed up a little more, making the loading process rather simple. I followed the suggestions from other Mac Baren reviewers and packed it in a little loosely, to help in the cumbstion process. Expecting the traditional incendiary experience from Mac Baren, I was surprised to try instead a gentle, mellow, yet very well structured tobacco taste! Slightly sweet, yes, but nothing compared, say, to Borkum Riff or Captain Black. This is in fact a medium strength tobacco, cool, with excellent burning characteristics. It is a mixture in almost equal proportions of aged Burley-the predominant flavour-and Golden Virginias, with some Black Cavendished Virginia leaf. The tobacco is of a dark brown hue with some black strands, partly rubbed, partly in broken flakes, very similar in texture to Mixture or Virginia No 1. I don’t know what the topping in Golden Ambrosia is. It has a winy, fruity undertone, very gentle and discreet, that, in my opinion, does not really interfere with the tobacco flavour. As I was sitting in an open terrace, the aroma quickly dissipated, but I was complimented on its smell by some of the locals (huele bien, señor, huele bien). Tasty, rich, slow burning, the agreeable sweetness of Golden Ambrosia complemented perfectly the dark, roasted coffee (I drink mine with no sugar). The flavour is rich and nutty, and surprisingly gentle on the palate, provided you puff in slowly and calmly. So I just sat back, enjoyed the flavours and let my self be carried away by the views and the whole experience. If you like slightly aromatic tobaccos, and are willing to puff in gently and slowly, you may find Golden Ambrosia is a very nice change of pace. I plan to buy some more in the future. Not at all a bad choice.”

GL Pease: Artisian, Small Batch, Blended Pipe Tobacco

Pipe Quote of the Day, from PipeMagazine.com:

“The fact is, squire, the moment a man takes to a pipe, he becomes a philosopher. It’s the poor man’s friend; it calms the mind, soothes the temper, and makes a man patient under difficulties. It has made more good men, good husbands, kind masters, indulgent fathers, than any other blessed thing on this universal earth. by Sam Slick, the clockmaker”

One of the great pipe tobacco blenders is Mr. Gregory L. Pease.

“Since 1999, Gregory L. Pease has been the principal alchemist behind the blends of G.L. Pease Artisanal Tobaccos. He’s been a passionate pipeman since his university days, having cut his pipe teeth at the now extinct Drucquer & Sons Tobacconist in Berkeley, California. Greg is also author of The Briar & Leaf Chronicles, a photographer, recovering computer scientist, sometimes chef, and co-creator of The Epicure’s Asylum.”

Leopold Brothers Absinthe Verte Wins Silver Medal In International Wine and Spirits Competition

http://www.leopoldbros.com/Absinthe_Verte.html

“Our handcrafted Absinthe Verte is prepared following the traditions of European master distillers of the 19th Century. We start with imported Chilean Pisco, placing it in our small 150 liter copper potstill, carefully adding the traditional Absinthe Verte herbs: Anise, Grande Wormwood, and Sweet Fennel, together with a number of proprietary botanicals. The herbs are gently distilled at a high alcoholic strength, capturing the essential aromas and oils that are in the very heart of our hand selected flowers and herbs. These herbs are grown and harvested in the fields of Spain, France, and Western Europe, and the unmistakable aromas of these peaceful European meadows are captured in every bottle of our Absinthe Verte. Before the Absinthe Verte is bottled, it must undergo a coloring step. Many commercial absinthes are colored artificially. Ours is colored in the most traditional manner by placing our hand selected coloring herbs (Hyssop, Melissa, and Roman Wormwood) in cheesecloth and steeping the blend in warmed Absinthe Verte. These coloring herbs strengthen the floral aromas and citrusy undertones of the finished Absinthe Verte. The high alcohol content of the Absinthe Verte leaches chlorophyll from the plant material, turning it a wholly natural, vibrant green color that is similar to the gemstone Peridot. This unique hue is one of the reasons that French Impressionists of the Belle Époque took so strongly to traditionally prepared, handcrafted Absinthe Verte.”

Why None of This Site Really Matters

Well, the truth is that life is not all about having material things.

Read and listen to the story of Alexandra Penney who went from riches to rags after investing with Madoff.

Who knows, it could happen to you and me!

Personally, I don’t think that she is as bad off as she says she is….many don’t have the contacts she has to recover…nor the excess properties that she can sell…but it does make an interesting story….
